Never underestimate WELS. WELS will find a way to gloat about this disaster saying it is the Will of God.
It is the will of God - chastisement.
I have not noticed cuts or caps in the following areas:
• Church and Change activity, e.g., the CORE and associated waste
• Outstanding debt
• Pastor’s who copy their sermons from other denominations
• Proposed construction
• Salaries of DPs, VPs, and SP
• Synod Office staff and equipment
• The number of DPs and VPs
• The number of education facilities, e.g., MLS
• The number of scheduled conferences and meetings
• Travel and entertainment expenses
• Utility bills, e.g., using Magic Jacks to reduce the telephone bills
Are these sacred cows in WELS?
On the income side, what are the grant writers doing for synod?
They are not sacred cows. They are certainly not cash cows. They are the proverbial cows that come home to signal the end of something.
update on Thailand:
while the two missionary positions were eliminated for "budget cuts," a WELS church has been able to go Galt and independently support missionary Meister.
This is bad news for the Thailand mission committee, consisting of Dave Kehl and Ken Pasch. So much so that they decided to call one of their own (Ken Pasch) to be the Thailand Mission Coordinator, while the Meisters are still in Thailand.
Pasch, by the way, doesn't have over ten years of language, culture, and relationships like Krohn. Pasch, by the way, doesn't have over 17 years of Thai language, culture, and relationships like Meister.
Corporate America take note: I haven't seen a hostile takeover go down like this in years. All the while, the committee can claim to be doing the will of God.
