I watched only two football games this year, ignoring the pros and most of the colleges, even ND. The last contest I viewed was Clemson beating OSU, causing me to make this instant prediction to Mrs. Ichabod, "Clemson will lose their final game, because they will still be worn out from their near-miss victory over the Buckeyes."
I saw the points in the previous LSU game (63-28 over Oklahoma) and pointed out, "Their margin was so great, they will win the championship." Christina yawned.
Another key indicator went against Clemson. Fans held up a big championship sign from last year's victories. I thought, "Yes, yes. Come into the game, with the championship already won. What happened to - when you are strong, appear weak -
The Art of War?"
Those attitudes have changed battles of all sorts from the beginning of time. One general said, "An army is defeated the moment it thinks it is."
OSU once went to a Rose Bowl with the Heisman Award winner as the quarterback. Their opponents were almost unknown. By half-time that quarterback was more depressed than a WELS life-coach.
Long ago, Knute Rockne begged Southern Cal's coach to hold down the margin of their victory against poor little Notre Dame, a tiny parochial college at the time. He added, in his pleading conversation, "After the game is over, come and shake hands with our team. It will so much to our boys." He had USC's heads in the clouds the whole game and trounced them.
Self-deception seems to be the rule today. People read their own public relations statements in the media and believe them. No one is allowed to think within the LCMS, WELS, the LIttle Sect, ELCA, or ELDONA. They could not be anything less than paradise on earth. No questions can be raised about the looming disaster.
There is one continuous war, which will not end until time no more exists. The Kingdom of Satan will pursue its battle against the Kingdom of Christ, never relenting, never slacking. However, the individual believer cannot lose.
Romans 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
However, so many think they have won - especially the clergy - because they have attained the security and honors they coveted long ago.

Why is this so funny? Because it is true to life. |
