MLC Video Comment - But Wait - Does Everyone Know the Entire Concept Was Copied from Another Group?

I suppose one could chalk it up to "college humor" and call it quits. But there is an element of mean-spirited sarcasm and deprecation be it the older NWC or current MLC variety. If one has ever been on the receiving end or seen someone on the receiving end of the supposedly "just done in jest" remarks, one can but cringe at the snarky jokes, skits, etc. One would hope most have moved beyond that. It's pathetic when it doesn't happen. The pattern, once ingrained, rears its ugly head again and again. In WELSdom, it's so difficult to tackle an issue objectively without someone interjecting a college-era assessment of so and so. Those off-hand remarks hijack the issue-at-hand and turn it into character defamation. The esoteric nature of the humor is pretty much lost on those outside the circle. Not that anybody really cares though. The circle is limited to start with. Grow up and leave the schoolboy ways behind.

GJ - The Shrinkers in WELS are thin-skinned but really caustic in their "just joking" comments. Someone anonymously claimed I ruined the reputations of these kids by embedding their video. They produced the video, recording it without any suggestions from me, and--behold--posted the video to YouTube for all the world to watch and enjoy.

Here is the real scandal - the entire video is a bad copycat version of Party in the FIP, which has 2 million views. I stumbled on it while looking for more information on the MLC one. I will embed the code for both.

http://tinyurl.com/yhgwql7 This is our dorm video for Summit dorm at MLC, Homecoming 2009. Thanks to the fellas of FIP for the inspiration. [Inspiration? Intellectual theft with a vague reference is not inspiration.]

So we have a real hoot. The kids have shamed themselves, WELS, and MLC by stealing an original idea and presenting it as their own. I would say they had a great future ahead of them - except the Shrinkers are shrinking in number. They have hitched their wagons to a falling star.

I will let the readers compare the two versions.

Ok Professor

Let me apologize to you and others.

This completely changes it. I've commented regarding the video and I've criticized people who call this video a sin--I'd like to revise...Totally!

If the MLC video had been an original, not a parody of a video done by openly recognized homosexuals (filmed at a gay and lesbian resort), I would stand by my earlier opinion. In that case it would've just been a silly bunch of kids making fun of a song.

But as it is, I think the MLC students involved gave a whole lot of credence to the homosexual lifestyle. Seeing the original video makes me wonder if some of the MLC students are gay themselves. I mean, I'm pretty sure their (sic) not, but I think it's logical for an observer to wonder.

I know I was defending their actions as "childish but not wrong" but seeing the gay video made me do a 180--they've undeniably associated themselves to gay culture. I believe that making the video was wrong, and the fact that they called it "Party in the MLC" annihilates MLC's credibility as a religious school. In fact I think I might be writing the Dean of Students at MLC.

Why shouldn't these students be expelled?

If this is not (in essence) a public statement by certain future WELS pastors and teachers that homosexuality is a laughing matter, then what would it take?? And if MLC doesn't discipline those students isn't it reasonable to believe that MLC is officially permissive of gayness?

I'm very sorry that I didn't look into the issue further before forming an opinion and criticizing people as too stringent.

GJ - Your apology is accepted. Now MLC should apologize to WELS. Not long ago SP Schroeder took on ELCA for its endorsement of homosexuality. This video is certainly a backwards step. I had more information about the original FIP video, once I found it, but that information was not something I wanted to discuss.

I do not find the MLC copy-cat version cool, funny, or creative. True, it is even worse when the original is viewed. The MLC video is worse in several respects. The crotch-grabber would qualify in many communities as cause for arrest for public indecency. Does MLC have any standards at all? Wait, I remember - their favorite keynote speaker is Paul Calvin Kelm. Doctrinal apostasy always bears fruit.

Without intellectual theft what do these sophomoric students have going for them?

All right, people. This is classified as a) an homage, b) a riff, c) a goof,or d) a clone. If you spend any time on Youtube, you realize that these sort of things are all over the place. There must be a million versions of "Dramatic Prairie Dog," for example. As an homage, this one is pretty good. The makers ape most of the major segments, make good use of local landmarks to appeal to a selective audience, inject a bit of variety, clearly understand how ridiculous the source material is, and don't take themselves too seriously. Well done, MLC guys.

Pastor Jackson,

The men of FIP have seen the video and were some of the first to comment on it. If you travel to the beginning of the comments section you will see that is the truth.

Also, the reason the MLC video has so many views is because FIP helped publicize it when it first came out.

In response to DK, my sentiments! I too shook my head and did not leave a comment on the earlier post. Copying gay and lesbian videos are we. I just viewed the FIP video one minute ago. If GJ is not going to discuss information that he found, then it can't be real good. I did not attend MLC. I got into the WELS back in 2001.(husband is a life long WELS) I teach children in Sunday School who will someday attend that school. I can be found in the company of MLC graduates on a daily basis. Could toss around some sir names, but I won't. What was their interest in FIP video to begin with?(probably something I would not want to discuss)The marriage bed is to be kept pure. God put Eve with Adam, not Steve. "New Ulm, We Have A Problem"!

I find it interesting that you choose only to post those blog comments that only correlate your opinion. Why not post all blog comments on the page in plain view for everyone to see?
Also where has our sense of humor gone? Are we all suppose to be staunch German robots set in our ways? Last time I checked it's hard to reach out to non-Christians when you have a "better than thou" attitude. Congrats to these young men for having some fun and letting people see their fun side.
I can only think that this will make it that much easier for children and teens to approach them when they become pastors and teachers. The children won't view them only as stuck up, snobby pastors and teachers who are unapproachable. Instead this will keep these young men down to earth and in touch with the one thing the WELS needs to continue, the younger generation.

So wait, this guy thinks it's okay to like Monty Python, but not a Youtube video featuring a mockery of another Youtube video, of which there are thousands online? He didn't even do his initial research to find out that the video was inspired by the Party in the FIP video. This blog, and the people responding to its completely outrageous claims are nothing more than a bunch of gossiping old grannies. And gossip is a sin, in case you didn't know.

I really enjoyed watching the "Party in the MLC" video, knowing that these boys created it for MLC students to watch. They then posted it on YouTube for their friends that couldn't be at the talent show that night, and their moms. ("Look, mom, how silly we are!") Those select few were their intended audience. If you aren't one of those people, you were never meant to see it.
For that reason, it is a shame that they posted it on YouTube for the whole world to see. They never expected that the whole world would! I do know that they intend to take it off YouTube shortly. Hopefully they will post it on Facebook, because it is a funny video. But they need to restrict the audience to their friends, fellow students, and family. After all, that audience is the only one which understands these boys and their beliefs (including recognizing homosexuality as a sin)! The comments on your blog posts have proven that all too well.
As for comments you have received which contain spelling errors and bad language, that is also a shame. Yet chances are I agree with some of those sentiments.

Mr. Jackson, I'm not a Christian and I stumbled upon this blog by accident, so I don't understand everything you say in these blogs, but I want to say thanks for confirming me in my unbelief. You have shown me that Christians, even "pastors", have nothing better to do than sit around gossiping and slandering eachother.

And this video looks like they made it for the same reason you write this blog- in the name of satire! The only difference is you think this blog is funny and the video is not because it was done by students at a school you don't like.

Troll much?

"Confirming me in my unbelief"?! What non-Christian would say such a thing?

But I do believe one thing you said: you don't understanding everything being said in this blog.

mr. Jackson if you are as pious as you claim to be why are you not talking about the sin that the original Video makers are comitting. don't just bash a Religious group because you think you are better than them. you should be ashamed to call yourself pious.

Dear Mr. Jackson do you realize that you have also stolen an idea. the cat that you have at thetop of this page is not your idea so you have done the exact same thing as the MLC students did.

Mr. Jackson you understand they are just college kids enjoying themselves making a ridiculous video for other college kids to laugh at.. they even managed to give credit to the FIP gang in their end credits. How dare you take away freedom of expression and laughter of tens of thousands of other.
