Confession of Faith:
WELS and Evangelical Covenants Agree
Verbatim!

I started seeing an odd agreement among Church Growth congregations when I read their statements of beliefs. I wondered what the Ur-Document was. I think I have found it. This is better than the Rosetta Stone. I have lined up a few lines with the links. Everyone is encouraged to pursue this.

Craig Groeschel's list is the Rosetta Stone of WELS plagiarism. Let's look at the overall order:

God
Jesus Christ
About the Holy Spirit
About the Bible
About Human Beings
About Salvation
About Eternity

The WELS copycats (and CrossRoads, ECC nee WELS, South Lyons) have listed their beliefs in the same order, with some minor variations. I have listed the Rosetta Stone version first, followed by the rest.

God (Groeschel)
God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three personalities: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are coequal and are one God.
· Genesis 1:1,26,27,3:22
· Psalm 90:2
· Matthew 28:19
· 1 Peter 1:2
· 2 Corinthians 13:14

Holy Spirit (Rock and Roll)
The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son in power, authority and majesty. Since we cannot by our own thoughts or choices believe in Christ or come to him, the Holy Spirit calls us to faith through the good news of Jesus Christ. He makes us aware of our sin and deep need for Christ. He also draws us to Christ by working through the Word of God and Baptism. After drawing us to faith, the Holy Spirit then carries out the work of renewing us through Word and Sacrament - giving us power for Christian living, understanding spiritual truth and guidance in doing what is pleasing to God. As Christians, we strive to live under his control daily.

About Human Beings (Groeschel)

People are made in the spiritual image of God, to be like Him in character. People are the supreme object of God's creation. Although every person has tremendous potential for good, all of us are marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called "sin". Sin separates us from God and causes many problems in our life.

· Isaiah 53:6a
· Romans 3:23
· Isaiah 59:1-2

Human Beings (Rock and Roll)
People were originally created in the spiritual image of God and were sinless and holy. Since the fall of mankind into sin, this is no longer true. Now, all people are born sinful and are constantly inclined to sin by nature. We are spiritually lost and dead apart from Jesus Christ. However, through faith in Christ we are new-born and are given the ability to serve God, live for his purposes and enjoy his blessings.

About Salvation (Groeschel)

Salvation is God's free gift to us but we must accept it. We can never make up for our sin by self:improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God's offer of forgiveness can anyone be saved from sin's penalty. When we turn from our self:ruled life and turn to Jesus in faith we are saved. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith.

Salvation (Rock and Roll)
Salvation is God's free gift to us. It comes to us through no effort or decision on our part. We can never make up for our sin by self-improvement or a life of goodness and kindness. God won salvation for us by loving us, sending his son Jesus Christ to live a perfect life and die a sacrificial death as our substitute. It is through this act of Jesus that salvation became ours. Even faith is not to our credit, for there too God provides his Holy Spirit to create faith in our hearts and minds. Salvation comes to lost mankind by grace alone, through faith alone, in God’s Word alone.

In addition to Essential Beliefs, we uphold the following (Groeschel)

In Non-Essential Beliefs, we have liberty. Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters... Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master he stands or falls... So then each of us will give an account of himself to God... So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God.
In All our Beliefs, we show charity. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
· Romans 14:1,4,12,22
· 1 Corinthians 13:2
