It's surprising that NYC still has the old-style garbage trucks. The new trucks are like the postal vehicles in that the driver drives on the curb side. It has a deadman switch so when there is no weight on the seat, the vehicle breaks. Then the driver hops out curbside to load the garbage in the bin which is right behind the cab. That way, it's a one-man operation which is a lot cheaper, and when the vehicle moves, no one or two people are clinging to the outside of the vehicle on a running board at the rear next to smelly garbage. Here's an old style truck:
Joel, As bad as the unions are, they are a way to siphon money down to the lower classes. Otherwise, the GINI index in the US would be off the chart. The lower middle class continues to be squeezed, and it can't be any other way. If the upper class is paying only 29% or 35% in tax, instead of much more prior to the Reagan era, that means everyone else is paying a greater share than they used to support schools, roads, govt, plus maintaining the national debt, etc.

Bruce--
But then the sanitation unions would have less people collecting NYC wages and less union dues coming in.
