Tim Niedfeldt ahhhh. So we will be eclectic....letting NPH decide which translation to use...with no new translation on the horizon. So essentially we just voted for NIV11. Got it!

Joe Jewell My worry, though, is that this is just one more indication that NIV2011 is going to be the de facto standard. This "NPH can choose" stuff--is there any reason at all to think they won't choose NIV2011 90% of the time??

Joe Jewell What I foresee is that all the curricula, hymnals, and catechisms, and most read books will be almost all NIV2011, with a few niche works read by few occasionally using one of the other translations.

Paul Rydecki No, Joe, there's no reason to think they won't and every reason to think they will. The WELS is now a church body that recommends no English translation of the Bible. All are fine, but all are equally flawed, and so it shall be forevermore. There's a nice statement on the Word of God.

Joe Jewell So, on balance, I would have preferred a "new" translation to hitching ourselves to the Zondervan wagon. At least that would have been a concrete acknowledgement that NIV2011 was deficient (leaving aside the fact that I think other existing translations would do OK--but that's why this question never should have been decoupled from the choice in the first place).
