We loved singing this Luther hymn during the Bethany Lutheran service last Sunday. Thank you for posting this in this way. Most Lutheran laity have had Christian discernment bled out of them by the violent work of false teachers and apathetic Synod worshipers. Now they swoon at anyone who cries Lord, Lord and claims the name of Christian although their official and stated doctrines and public practices are contrary to Christ and His Word.
Christ's continued blessings to you and Mrs. Ichabod,
Apparently the local pastor isn't effective enough to teach a Bible study to his parish. Now the WELS needs "great Bible study leaders" to get the message to the masses.
From the WELS "Together":
For the first time, WELS is making Bible studies available to congregations across the synod through live video streaming. Rev. Thomas Kock, member of the Commission on Adult Discipleship, says, “The idea is, let’s get some of our great Bible study leaders in front of the masses.”
The first synodwide studies will be a three-part series offered by Rev. Jon Schroeder from Faith, Sharpsburg, Ga., Nov. 2, 9, and 16 at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Eastern Time on the topic of “Our Calling,” based on his essay to the 2009 synod convention. Each study will contain three parts: a lecture session by the presenter, opportunities for each local congregation to work on their own application questions or to explore points more fully, and responses by the presenter to questions and comments submitted by participants via instant messaging. To participate, congregations will need a computer hooked to a high speed Internet connection. For an ideal presentation, they should have a projector and a sound amplification system. Kock says he’s pleased with results of initial tests of the concept. A test streaming of a series on the end times by Rev. John Brug, professor at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, drew about 20 congregations across the South Atlantic District.
So what does the local pastor do while his congregation is tuned in to the "great Bible study leader?" Awkward!

This hymn does appear in the Christian Worship hymnal. Verses 2 and 5 are missing.
