This change has been facilitated the Better Bigness Bureau of Thrivent, Siebert, Schwan, and Fuller. But all is not lost - just the opposite is true. Yes, the synods are all taking their blood pressure medicine and statins, while looking over the real spreadsheets. They are squeezing the equity out of their failing congregations, which are real estate goldmines developed by generations of generous members.
Cash flow is good, better than the hoi polloi guess. I heard years ago about WELS putting incompetent and irregular pastors into positions where the membership was cratering, the real estate soaring. Their experts, with IQs hovering around room temperature, sooth the congregation as it gives up all its assets. Two WELS congregations recently turned over big piles of cash, not unlike roasting marshmallows - a sweet fragrance and soon gone.
The new horizon Reformation includes those who gather through the Internet and have their own worship, study, training, and evangelism. Like the original congregations in America, they can band together, remain independent, or loosely affiliate. We know from current synodical scandals that forming corporations with huge slush funds is not wise.
The change is happening through the work of the Holy Spirit in the Word.
