The Olde Synodical Conference Can Stop Blaming the Catholics:
Lessons from the WELS Joel Hochmuth Arrest.

DIYGirl has left a new comment on your post "The Olde Synodical Conference Can Stop Blaming the...":

Now is not the time for your trademark "humor" in tearing the WELS apart.

You should be offering prayers for this man as he struggles, and especially prayers for anyone affected by his problems.

Your cartoons are distasteful this time around and you ought to be ashamed.

***

GJ - A WELS member created the graphic. You ought to  be ashamed of leaders who re-victimized abused boys by letting this go on at The Love Shack. The graphic expresses his or her feelings about the synod's doctrine and practice.

---

Count me as one of the few people not surprised by the arrest of a WELS headquarters staffer. The WELS approach to all scandals has been:
  1. Deny the facts.
  2. Hide the evidence.
  3. Play stupid.
  4. Attack anyone who questions this approach.
  5. Trash the families of the innocent.
  6. Reward the offender.
WELS is a corrupt, abusive sect, anti-Lutheran and anti-Confessional.

Some questions need to be asked:

  • Since the WELS counseling agency was involved with Joel Hochmuth's problem (dates not given), why was this scandal and crime allowed to worsen?
  • WELS has an overpaid Shrinker in charge of technology at The Love Shack, but no one knew hundreds of deviant photos and videos were being used there?
  • No uploading or downloading? No viewing? Why were all those files at WELS headquarters when some were also at his home, where the first raid took place?
  • How many WELS workers were sharing files with Hochmuth, since they have such strict fellowship rules?
  • How can Synod President Mark Schroeder cluck his tongue in public about ELCA's gay agenda, work with ELCA, support the MLC gay video, and act surprised at the results?
  • When will WELS connect its universal absolution (UOJ) nonsense with its own antinomian behavior?

Mark Schroeder shredded his own credibility when he acted dumb about a police raid on a staffer's home, a staffer's arrest, and a police raid on 2929 Mayfair Road, WELS headquarters. He hoped it was all a big mistake, but he must have known about Hochmuth's problem.

WELS is a sect where a DP will march in and fire a pastor on the spot - for questioning the synod. But Hochmuth has the WELS headquarters building involved in federal crimes against children. Hochmuth is "suspended."

Schroeder knows that the official complaint lists photos and videos found at his own office building. The media contents are described as graphic acts involving young boys, aged 10 to 14.

"The defendant stated that what would be found on his home computer was nothing compared to what they would find in his office."

We have some very sad and disturbing news to share with you.

On Wed., Nov. 16, we were informed that WELS Director of Communications Mr. Joel Hochmuth was arrested on charges of possessing child pornography. Acting on a tip from the FBI Cyber Crimes Task Force, officers executed search warrants at his home and at the synod administration building and seized computers and other items as a part of their investigation.

At this time, we know only what was contained in the police report and reported in the media. Those reports indicate that images of child pornography were found on the seized computers and on data storage devices.

Hochmuth has been employed for the past five years in the WELS administrative headquarters as the director of communications.

We take allegations such as these very seriously and emphasize that WELS has absolutely no tolerance for the kind of behavior that has been alleged. Hochmuth’s employment with the synod has been suspended until the facts of the case are fully known.

We have informed the authorities that we are committed to cooperate fully with them in their investigation.

We pray for God’s gracious care and healing for the Hochmuth family.

We pray for the innocent victims of the production and distribution of child pornography wherever and whenever it occurs.

We also ask for your continuing prayers for our synod. Satan is truly a powerful enemy seeking to undermine and destroy God’s people and his church. But we pray that our heavenly Father would remind us that we have a more powerful God who promises that the gates of hell itself will not prevail against his church.

Serving with you in Christ,
Rev. Mark Schroeder, WELS President

More pedophilia scandal in Pennsylvania, Secret Sex-Crime files, & trial this winter

More pedophilia scandal in Pennsylvania, Secret Sex-Crime files, & trial this winter:

The five co-defendants sit close enough to shake hands in the Philadelphia courtroom, but they never once acknowledge one another. Father James Brennan, a 47-year-old priest accused of raping a 14-year-old boy, looks sad and stooped in a navy sweater, unshaven and sniffling. Edward Avery, a defrocked priest in his sixties, wears an unsettlingly pleasant expression on his face, as though he's mentally very far away. He and two other defendants – the Rev. Charles Engelhardt, also in his sixties, and Bernard Shero, a former Catholic schoolteacher in his forties – are accused of passing around "Billy," a fifth-grade altar boy. According to the charges, the three men raped and sodomized the 10-year-old, sometimes making him perform stripteases or getting him drunk on sacramental wine after Mass.

Heinous as the accusations are, the most shocking – and significant – are those against the fifth defendant, Monsignor William Lynn. At 60, Lynn is portly and dignified, his thin lips pressed together and his double chin held high. In a dramatic fashion statement, he alone has chosen to wear his black clerical garb today, a startling reminder that this is a priest on trial, a revered representative of the Catholic Church, not to mention a high-ranking official in Philadelphia's archdiocese. Lynn, who reported directly to the cardinal, was the trusted custodian of a trove of documents known in the church as the "Secret Archives files." The files prove what many have long suspected: that officials in the upper echelons of the church not only tolerated the widespread sexual abuse of children by priests but conspired to hide the crimes and silence the victims. Lynn is accused of having been the archdiocese's sex-abuse fixer, the man who covered up for its priests. Incredibly, after a scandal that has rocked the church for a generation, he is the first Catholic official ever criminally charged for the cover-up.

"All rise," the court crier intones as the judge enters, and Lynn stands, flanked by his high-powered lawyers, whose hefty fees are being paid by the archdiocese. The implications of the trial are staggering for the church as a whole. In sheltering abusive priests, Lynn wasn't some lone wolf with monstrous sexual appetites, as the church has taken to portraying priests who have molested children. According to two scathing grand-jury reports, protocols for protecting rapists in the clergy have been in place in Philadelphia for half a century, under the regimes of three different cardinals. Lynn was simply a company man, a faithful bureaucrat who did his job exceedingly well. His actions were encouraged by his superiors, who in turn received orders from their superiors – an unbroken chain of command stretching all the way to Rome. In bringing conspiracy charges against Lynn, the Philadelphia district attorney is making a bold statement: that the Catholic hierarchy's failure to protect children from sexual abuse isn't the fault of an inept medieval bureaucracy, but rather the deliberate and criminal work of a cold and calculating organization. In a very real sense, it's not just Lynn who is on trial here. It's the Catholic Church itself.

The deluge of sexual-abuse cases in America's largest religious denomination began in 1985, when a Louisiana priest was sentenced to 20 years in prison after admitting to sexually abusing 37 boys. But it wasn't until 2002, when civil suits in Boston revealed that Cardinal Bernard Law had shielded rapist priests, that the extent of the scandal became widely known. In Germany, the church is overwhelmed by hundreds of alleged victims, and investigations are under way in Austria and the Netherlands. In Ireland, the government recently issued a scathing report that documents how Irish clergy – with tacit approval from the Vatican – covered up the sexual abuse of children as recently as 2009.

Battered by civil suits and bad press, the church has responded with a head-spinning mix of contrition and deflection, blaming anti-Catholic bias and the church's enemies for paying undue attention to the crisis. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops helped fund a $1.8 million study of sex-abuse cases against priests, but the results read like a mirthless joke: To lower the number of clergy classified as "pedophiles," the report redefines "puberty" as beginning at age 10 – and then partially blames the rise in child molesting on the counterculture of the 1960s. The church also insists that any sex crimes by priests are a thing of the past. "The abuse crisis," the study's lead author concluded, "is over.

That echoed statements by Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York, who went on 60 Minutes declaring the scandal "nothing less than hideous" and then, with a sweep of his hand, announced, "That's over with!" Dolan, in turn, sounded a lot like Bishop Wilton Gregory, the former president of the USCCB, who framed the lie more eloquently: "The terrible history recorded here is history." That was in 2004, seven years ago.

Given how the innermost workings of Catholic culture have long been cloaked in secrecy, the case in Philadelphia offers a rare opportunity to understand why the cover-up of sexual abuse has continued for so long, despite the church's repeated promises of reform. The answer, in large part, lies in the mindset of the church's rigid hierarchy, which promotes officials who are willing to do virtually anything they're told, so long as it's in God's name. "It's almost like the type of stuff you see in cult behavior," says a former Philadelphia priest who asked not to be identified for fear of retribution. "Someone on the outside would say, 'That's crazy.' But when you're on the inside, you say, 'It's perfectly right, because everything is divinely inspired.' If you have a monopoly on God, you can get away with anything.

Long before he became the guardian of the church's secrets, Bill Lynn was a boy with a higher calling. In the fall of 1968, after graduating from Bishop McDevitt High School in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Lynn arrived at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, a stately campus whose soaring chapels, somber libraries and marble sculptures with heads bowed in prayer gave off an aura of reverence, history and costly precision. Lynn, a friendly, overweight boy whose acne-scarred face was topped with jet-black hair, was ready to begin his eight-year path to priestly ordination, a process the church calls "formation."

At St. Charles, Lynn was plunged into an environment in which every moment was accounted for. Strict rules governed all aspects of life, especially the personal. Besides the obvious prohibitions on sexual contact – including with oneself, or even in one's imagination – no seminarian was allowed to get too close with his peers, since he was to concentrate on developing bonds with God and the church. Seminary is a form of military-style indoctrination, molding men to think institutionally, not individually. "It's like a brainwashing, almost," says Michael Lynch, who attended St. Charles for nine years but was rejected for priesthood after repeatedly butting heads with his superiors. Lynch recalls a priest barking at his class, "We own you! We own your body, we own your soul!

The goal of priesthood is a lofty one: a man placed on a pedestal for his community to revere, an alter Christus – "another Christ" – who can literally channel the power of Jesus and help create the perfect society intended by God. To model that perfection and elevate themselves above the sinful laity, clergy adopt a vow of celibacy, which has served as a centerpiece of Catholic priesthood since the 12th century. It's a tall order to sculpt chaste, living incarnations of Jesus out of the sloppy clay of your average 18-year-old male. Even many of those who wind up being ordained fail to maintain their chastity: According to a 1990 study by psychologist Richard Sipe, only half of all priests adhere to their vows of celibacy. It is not just the sex-abuse epidemic the church seeks to deny, but sex itself.

PEDOPHILE SEX RING AT PENN STATE?

IS THIS A PEDOPHILE SEX RING

By Jon Rappoport
www.nomorefakenews.com
November 10, 2011.

MarkMadden, a Pennsylvania radio host, wrote a piece about Jerry Sandusky, the accused Penn State pedophile, back in April, while a grand jury was deciding whether to indict Sandusky.

Madden alerted readers that something very nasty might leap out at them soon. Well, now it has. Sandusky has been indicted on 40 counts of child abuse. For years, he was Joe Paterno’s assistant football coach at Penn State.

And Paterno, and the school’s athletic director, and the school president have all been fired, because they were told (in one form or another) about Sandusky raping a young boy in the Penn State locker room shower, and they didn’t make sure the cops knew about it and took action.

Well today. Madden, this radio host, has more to say. He states there is a chance that Sandusky, who has been running a foundation to help young kids, has been pimping some of these kids out to rich Penn State donors.

I was speculating about this to a friend last night. I was also telling him about the mysterious case of Ray Gricar, the local prosecutor who considered filing charges against Sandusky back in 1998, when the first report came in accusing Sandusky of washing two naked boys in a shower. Gricar eventually decided not to prosecute.

No one can ask Gricar about his reasoning now, because he disappeared a few years ago, after leaving his home to do a few routine errands.

Eventually, his car was found. Inside the car was his cell phone. His wallet and keys were gone.

Sometime later, his laptop was found in a river, with the hard drive missing.

Sometime later, the hard drive was found in the river bank, but it was too damaged to collect data from.

Police, at Gricar’s home, examined his desk computer, and discovered that Gricar (or someone) had been doing searches on how to disable a hard drive.

<

Gricar has never been found.

What was so important on the hard drive? Evidence of wider pedophile activity?

Did Gricar commit suicide? Was he murdered?

Jerry Sandusky, the accused pedophile, was once one of the most respected assistant college football coaches in America. When he abruptly retired, in 1999, people were shocked. Equally strange, no college since that time has signed him up to coach.

But since 1999, Sandusky has had access to Penn State football facilities, and was seen there as recently as last week.

Sandusky’s foundation for at-risk kids, The Second Mile, is well known. It has major funding. It’s also, of course, a perfect setting for a pedophile.

Nothing has been proved in court against Sandusky. There could be a trial, there could be a plea bargain.

Yesterday, several sports writers, in the wake of the firings at Penn State, said, “Let the healing begin.” They always do. They always refer to sports programs as “the point of pride” for a big university. As if without that religious component, the whole institution would go down the drain. Well, now they may have to wait for the healing. Because if this latest suggestion about pimping out kids to rich donors is true, football will fade out. The University will crumble, and that’s just for starters.

There will be secret payoffs, certain men will be boarding planes out of the country, various cover-up crimes will be committed. There will be massive stonewalling.

Keep watching. See if this accusation of pimping kids to rich men is dismissed as irresponsible incitement…and vanishes with no follow-up, no investigation.

WITI-TV, WAUKESHA— Bond was set Thursday at $20,000 for Joel Hochmuth, the Director of Communications for the Lutheran Group WELS - the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, after he was arrested for child porn. Hockmuth has been charged with three counts of possessing child pornography, after a sting operation by the FBI's Cyber Crimes Task Force found child porn images and videos on Hochmuth's personal and work computers, as well as thumb drives.

Mark Schroeder, president of Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod says they have suspended Hochmuth's emloyment. Schroeder says "my reaction was just total shock, surprise, devastation. This is not something I think any of us would have expected."

Hochmuth was arrested at his home in Waukesha Tuesday. According to the criminal complaint in the case, an undercover FBI agent used peer-to-peer software which allowed him to connect with Hochmuth's computer and browse for files, and says Hochmuth was sharing child porn. The agent says he also chatted with Hochmuth online, and Hockmuch allegedly told him he likes pictures of males 10 years of age or older.

The criminal complaint states that during his arrest, Hochmuth stated he has been struggling with an addiction to viewing pornographic photos and videos of young boys in sexually explicit poses, but denies ever creating his own pornography. The complaint also says Hochmuth's wife caught him looking at the images once, and says they went to counseling as a result.

Officials removed a desktop computer and a laptop computer from Hockmuth's home, and the criminal complaint states Hochmuth said what would be found on his home computer was nothing compared to what they would find in his office. A search warrant was executed at Hochmuth's office, and FBI agents found a thumb drive, containing 310 child porn images, and 38 videos. Agents say there were several hundred images found on Hochmuth's home computer.

Hochmuth is accused of possessing and distributing child pornography online. He is to have no contact with minors, except his own child, and cannot use any device that can access the internet. He is due back in court December 16th.

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- A Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod employee was arrested Tuesday on child pornography charges, according to Waukesha police.

Investigators said the FBI Cyber Crimes Task Force provided them with evidence that child pornography was distributed from a home in the 1900 block of Hunter Court. Police searched the home and arrested Joel Hochmuth after they found numerous images of child pornography, according to a police report. Hochmuth, 52, is the director of communications for the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. He was in the Waukesha County Jail Tuesday night and was expected in court on Wednesday.

12 News spoke with the group's president, Mark Schroeder, by phone. He said he is hopeful the allegations prove to be a false alarm or a mistake. He said Hochmuth's job does not involve direct contact with children.

The WELS are the third largest Lutheran church body in America with 390,000 members. The national headquarters are in Milwaukee.

WELS HIRES COMMUNICATION DIRECTOR

In an effort to fully coordinate communications and provide messages effectively and efficiently to various constituents, WELS has hired Joel Hochmuth to be its full-time director of  communications.

In this position, Hochmuth will be responsible for strategic planning, communication coordination, WELS publications, marketing efforts, and public relations for WELS.

“We have the rock-solid truth, but keeping it to ourselves doesn’t do anybody any good . . .,” says Hochmuth. “Our ultimate mission is to communicate the gospel.”

A member at Beautiful Savior, Marietta, Ga., Hochmuth worked for 15 years at Cable News Network (CNN) in Atlanta, Ga., where he produced hundreds of network-quality, long-form video reports and series. He also taught communication courses at Kennesaw State University, Kennesaw, Ga.

From SpenerQuest:

This from WISN Channel 12 in Milwaukee:

"12 News spoke with the group's president, Mark Schroeder, by phone. He said he is hopeful the allegations prove to be a false alarm or a mistake. He said Hochmuth's job does not involve direct contact with children."

Call me daft, but how is having child porn on your PC a 'false alarm'? "A mistake"? ('oops, I meant for those photos to be loaded on my iPad'). How about a sin - and a heinous one at that?

And another comment:

Indeed, President Schroeder's statement is quite disengenuous. Even a "We take these allegations seriously and will deal with them accordingly" is better than a "Hopefully, this is all a mistake," which gives a public impression that they do not take the allegations seriously and even that they are circling the wagons to defend Hochmuth. And I agree- I have no idea what he means by "false alarm"!  Who cares whether "Hochmuth's job does not involve direct contact with children." A statement that Hochmuth is no longer an employee of the WELS should have been issued immediately.

How denominational entities can stumble so badly, especially on that level, is baffling. Perhaps, in this case, it's because their communications director is in jail?!

An Idea for The Love Shack and PU Towers

No one can match WELS steweardship.

An idea from SpenerQuest:

I would beg to differ on their point that [WELS] CMO is flat. Adjusted for inflation, CMO peaked in 2008. It peaked in 2008 because congregational offerings peaked in 2008 (inflation adjusted). CMO is mainly a function of the number of members and how much they give. According to my calculations, CMO will continue to go down in the inflation-adjusted sense for the next few decades.

Just a month ago, I learned that 2009 represented the peak year of earnings for Baby Boomers. Statistically, they will never earn more (inflation adjusted), because of aging and retirement. Although the WELS has been shrinking since 1990, giving continued to rise until 2008. This article explains why giving continued to increase for nearly two more decades.

Because of these demographic changes, the best thing the WELS could do would be to sell property to pay down their debt, which threatens to grow in the per-capita sense. Buying a new, cheap admin building to replace their old, relatively valuable one is a very good idea.

An even better solution would be to sell both buildings and turn the basement of the new chapel at MLC into offices. There is more than enough room down there.

***

GJ - But where do they move when MLC is turned into a retirement village or a prison?

---

The same principle could be applied to the LCMS. The St. Louis seminary was rumored to be worth $500 million (granted the economy may have reduced this now), the purple palace is well located for a commercial building, again should be worth a pretty penny. Sell them, use some to build/buy property in Wentzville (on I-70 30 minutes from Lambert airport) where land is much cheaper.

Move the seminary to Concordia TX, where they have more land than they know what to do with; or Seward, NE in both cases to move away from the Synod HQ. That should leave enough to pay off the synod debt, at which point, it should be made illegal to go into debt more.

***

GJ - I wonder why Pewaukee Universalist Towers was not purchased on a contingency. That would have ended the sale when The Love Shack sale went bust.

Instead, WELS seems to be on the hook for $3 million for a real estate office building.  Was that an ominous sign? The firm did not want its own office building.

Real estate continues to decline in Milwaukee, something the real estate firm probably knew would happen. Mortgage foreclosures. Lay-offs. Unemployment. Obama. Leftist politics.

Various people have the same insights. Various denominations have plenty of land, and they own land in very choice locations, like Mequon. The officials would have to swallow their pride and pick low-cost land, away from their swank homes bought with tax-free housing allowance money.

A successful retailer has made a few billion dollars by following the same plan - low overhead, cheap land, no-frills headquarters. WELS and Missouri, though, are non-prophet operations.

AC V Suggests - Read the Tom Hardt Footnotes

WELS scholarship is so awesome. Exceptions to this claim are:
LCMS German catechism,
LCMS KJV catechism (still in print)
Gausewitz WELS catechism.

AC V has left a new comment on your post "Mystery Solved: The Secret Behind Robert Preus' Ju...":

Don't forget to read the footnotes in Hardt's essay, especially footnote #75 where he references R. Söderlund in his article “Läran om den universella rättfärdiggörelsen i teologihistorisk belysning” (“The doctrine of universal justification in the light of the history of theology”) in Svensk Teologisk Kvartalstidskrift, 1979, pp. 114-129.

In his article Söderlund criticizes S. Becker's theology of "Universal Justification":

Absolution and the means of grace are downgraded to means of communication and deprived of their efficacy. Sig Becker. op. cit., p. 55, interprets John 20:23: “they are remitted unto them” as a reference to what has already happened at Calvary, p. 56: “The meaning is this: ‘They have been forgiven completely in the past, and they still are forgiven now. This means that when we preach the message of the Gospel, we do not effect the remission of sins through our sermon.’” (tr. from Swedish). 3) Universal justification is said to be the contents of the sermon to be delivered to the heathen without any previous reference to the Law. This striking similarity to Huber’s pastoral advice to the Wittenberg theologians, quoted above in our article, is found in Becker, op. cit., p. 56 f. (tr. from Swedish): “In America it is very common that Reformed missionaries tell a man whom they try to gain: ‘Are you saved?’ … It is, however, not likely that a Lutheran missionary would ask: ‘Are you saved?’, as the experience of conversion is not so important from his theological point of view. As he believes in universal redemption and in universal justification it is more likely that he changes the order of the words and says: ‘You are saved,’ ‘Your sins are forgiven unto you.’ He can say so to everyone, as he knows that it is true about everyone.” Through the centuries Huber’s missionary sermon: “Habetis gratiam Dei” resounds in the 20th century. Undoubtedly Söderlund’s fears concerning the theology introduced through Becker into Sweden seem reasonably justified.

Perhaps a side-by-side "You are saved" quote by Becker next to the discredited Huber "You have salvation" quote would be appropriate.

One cannot toss double-justification schemes back into
the Book of Concord era, 1580.
Double-justification language was expressed by Knapp/Woods in 1831,
endorsed by CFW Walther later.
