In Defense of The Golden Compass Movie

Several people wrote me about The Golden Compass, a movie based on an atheistic book. Fox News invited an atheist to discuss the film. She said--and I paraphrase--"I haven't read the book or seen the movie, but children need more expressions of atheism."

Nicole Kidman, ex-wife of Scientologist Tom Cruise, is one of the stars. Another is Ian McKellen, aka Gandalf in Lord of the Rings. I did not rush out to buy the book or see the movie. Apparently the plot involves a young girl in a parallel universe. The compass "tells the truth." The theme of the last chapter of the book involves the girl murdering her father.

Like The Last Temptation of Christ, this movie seems to be aimed at the curious and the woefully ignorant.

Hollywood has been promoting abnormal, bizarre, and anti-religious themes for decades. Children's shows on Saturday were using occult and Satanic symbols decades ago. I recall one animal where the little girl turned toward the camera with a smirk on her face. She was wearing an upside-down star, which is Satanic. That was 30 years ago.
