The drunken hit-and-run ELCA bishop embarrasses other Lutherans,

In the Spirit: Lutheran pastor calls for special offering to honor victim : Wsj:

A Lutheran pastor in northern Wisconsin is calling on other churches in his denomination to take up special memorial offerings this Sunday for Maureen Mengelt, the 52-year-old Sun Prairie woman killed last Sunday while jogging.
Police arrested the Rev. Bruce Burnside on a tentative charge of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle. He was in sheriff’s custody as of Wednesday morning, awaiting the filing of formal charges.
Burnside is bishop of the South-Central Synod of Wisconsin of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
The Rev. Christopher Conner, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Birchwood, said he and others in his congregation were struggling with how to respond to the tragedy and came up with the idea of a special offering for the family or a charity of the family’s choice.
“We feel so badly,” (sic) he said. “There’s a lot of embarrassment among Lutherans over this.”
Trinity Lutheran Church is a member of the Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ, or LCMC, a different and much-smaller arm of Lutheranism than the ELCA for which Burnside is a bishop. Trinity has an average Sunday attendance of about 130, Conner said.
