Too Funny - Rick Warren Sends Taped Sermon to Mars Hill Closing

Glende, Ski, and Bishop Katie pretended to go to a WELS pastoral conference
when they traveled to Seattle to study under Mark Driscoll, Mars Hill.
The Jeske Mob loves anti-Lutheran ministry education.

Erik and Heidi Barnett knew the Mars Hill Church organization was holding its last day of services when they arrived at its Ballard location Sunday.
They knew why the last services had arrived: Aseries of controversies swirling around its charismatic co-founder and leader, Mark Driscoll, prompted the disbandment of the 18-year-old evangelical organization that had once spread to five states and served at least 13,000 Sunday worshippers.
As of Thursday, New Year’s Day, all its remaining churches will either dissolve or splinter off into individual religious entities.
But it still took the Barnetts by surprise when not even half the chairs at the 9 a.m. service were filled.
“It used to be packed; if you came even a little late, it was standing-room only,” said Heidi, 39.
The couple, who have recently been attending a Mars Hill church in Shoreline, were returning to the first Mars Hill site they worshipped at to say goodbye to an institution they say forever changed their lives for the better and brought them closer than ever to Jesus Christ.
After Driscoll converted the former Ballard hardware store into an urban church in 2003, Mars Hill and Driscoll’s preaching became so popular that several other locations opened over the next decade in Washington, Arizona, Oregon, California and New Mexico.
“I know for many of us, this is a bittersweet day,” Pastor Matthias Haeusel said to a crowd of about 200 before playing a 45-minute video-sermon that nationally known author and Pastor Rick Warren recorded for the organization’s last day of services.
The Mars Hill name has been plagued with bad headlines over the last year as Driscoll became increasingly associated with offensive remarks and contentious church politics. Church leaders accused him of lying, bullying members, threatening opponents and mismanaging church funds. Driscoll resigned from the megachurch in October.
But Haeusel said that as the Ballard church prepares for a new identity on Thursday — the Cross & Crown Church — he can feel a lifting of the mood of the approximately 600 people who still worship at its three Sunday services.
“There is still a level of sadness, some bewilderment,” Haeusel said. “Right now, though, it’s feeling like those emotions are beginning to crest into some excitement for what’s next.”
Timothy Malcham, 22, of Belltown, said he’s one of many looking forward to leaving behind controversies that distracted from the Ballard congregation’s services.
“It’ll be nice to be able to invite people to church again without all the baggage of Mars Hill getting in the way,” said Malcham. “This place has always been about Jesus and about people. It’s easy for me to get behind the people and staff at this church, and I’m confident they’ll make it healthier.”
Haeusel said the leadership structure of the Cross & Crown Church has not been completely hashed out. He said the Evangelical Christian Credit Union the church banks with wants to see fewer paid members on the church’s board before a new leadership structure is approved.
The Mars Hill Church signs on the building should be taken down by Jan. 9, Haeusel said, but changes within the church will evolve more gradually. Its service times and overall interior will not change.
Warren’s sermon, which was played at each of the remaining Mars Hill church locations, encouraged worshippers to see that distasteful moments in life will still come together as part of a beautiful — and maybe delicious — divine plan.
A self-professed “purpose-driven eater” who loves cooking with his wife, Warren compared God’s divine plan to baking a cake made with salt, flour, eggs and sugar.
“Eaten individually, every one of those items is pretty distasteful ... even if you eat sugar by itself, it’s just not that good,” Warren said. “But if you stir it all in, all things work together.”

GJ - Ski, Glende, and Bishop Katie traveled across the US together, attending various Evangelical cult churches to learn how to be successful. Katie resigned from The CORE suddenly (no reasons given). Ski resigned from The CORE and the ministry, only to be rescued by DP Don Patterson. Glende is building a new St. Timothy's across the road from St. Peter's in Freedom, Wisconsin.
Lest we forget, the man who started this, Robert Schuller, lost his church campus, his retirement, and his congregation, after decades of telling ministers (for a big fee) how to be successful.

Mark and Avoid Jeske caught the vision long ago.
Glende and Ski are both graduates of the Wizards' Academy,
aka St. Marcus in Milwaukee.

Church Mouse Blogger Writes from England

ChurchMouse is been a favorite stop for reading.

Dear Dr Jackson

Please accept my sincere thanks for mentioning my Downton Abbey posts last month on your esteemed site!

I wanted to comment on the posts at the time but could not see how to do it. I also do not have a Google account.

Please also accept equally sincere apologies for not having been in touch with you sooner to wish you a very happy Christmas. I hope that you, Mrs Jackson, Ms Boeckler and your family had a blessed day (or two) together.

Thanksgiving -- up to the present -- has been quite busy for me. I am only now getting a chance to catch up on December emails.

My very best wishes and heartfelt prayers to you and yours for a happy and healthy 2015!

Kindest regards

Dear ChurchMouse,

I have had trouble getting comments to work well. You can always write to bethanylutheranworship@gmail.com and I will copy the text into the post. Just identify the URL of the post, to speed up the process.

As you can see, I started the blog list again. My left column disappeared and I thought perhaps too much javascripting was going on. I had gardening blogs too, and that list may have confused Google Blogger. But I do not know.

No need to apologize. The last year has kept me too busy, so now I am only teaching online classes.

We had a wonderful Christmas in Seattle, Washington, then here in Springdale. We hope to see Norma Boeckler and others in 2015, when we travel with Sassy.

In Christ,

Ichabod

KJV Galatians 4:1 Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; 2 But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. 3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: 4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. 6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. 7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

KJV Luke 2:33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him. 34 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; 35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. 36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; 37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem. 39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. 40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

Sunday After Christmas

O almighty and everlasting God, mercifully direct our ways, that we may walk in Thy law, and be made to abound in good works: through Thy beloved Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one true God, world without end. Amen.

Gospel, Law, and Anti-Law
KJV Galatians 4:1 Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; 2 But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.

Galatians is a letter Paul wrote quickly in his own hand, crushing the outbreak of false doctrine in that congregation. Lutherans have always treasured the epistle as  a powerful declaration of justification by faith, "the Chief Article of the Christian Religion, the master and prince" of all other doctrinal matters, as Luther wrote.

Moreover, Luther wrote two commentaries on Galatians, the second one as his final say on justification by faith. This commentary was so important to the Book of Concord editors that they commended Luther's commentary twice - for readers wanting to know more about the topic.

In case anyone wonders about the Book of Concord's attitude, the section on justification is called "The Righteousness of Faith" in the Formula of Concord.

Going back 50 years earlier, the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, written by Melanchthon, has a long section on justification by faith, which reflects upon the Augsburg Confession, #4  and #5.

Anti-Law
This lesson is extremely important because the Antinomians (Anti-Law, literally) have misused it to promote their cause. That is not a side issue, because Universal Objective Justification (justification without faith) is another version of the Antinomian argument. The Antinomians say that "now we have Christ and the Gospel, so the Law is obsolete."

So their favorite passage needs to be restored to its clarity, to defeat their false claims. This chapter builds upon the classic one used for the Antinomian cause -

Galatians 3:23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

Paul is countering the false claims that Christians must be observant of Jewish law to be real Christians. After all, Jesus and the disciples were all Jews, and the Gospel is based on Old Testament Promises being fulfilled.

Against that, Paul preached that the Gospel alone converts and does not require someone to come from a background of Jewish observances.

KJV Galatians 4:1 Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; 2 But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.

This is a parable, offering a little story about the difference between being under the Law and under the Gospel, and it reflects the earlier passage about the schoolmaster. A child of wealth or influence is no better than a servant of his father when he is still in school, still being tutored. All of them are subordinate to the system and have to follow the rules. Some think they are above the rules because of their importance.

I have had these special students in college. One girl made sure I knew her father was on the faculty, so she acted very royal. I called her Princess.

The son of the richest father still has to pass English to get a degree, so he is no different from the butler or gardener at his father's home. He has to obey the rules. One said they had an enormous farm, but he kept copying his homework from the Net, so he failed.

Diplomas even say that the recipient has certain rights and privileges - after graduation. Before that they often feel like worms. Ask any graduate student. A doctoral student is a slave who must obey until the degree is granted. At one university, undergraduate degrees were given to students who knelt to receive them. Doctoral degrees were given to students who remained standing and shook hands with the university president.

24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

This is Paul's argument to keep the Galatians from returning to salvation based on obedience to the Law. The Antinomians have turned this into making the Law obsolete. In the UOJ version, everyone is born forgiven and will be forgiven all future sins. This eliminates repentance and the Means of Grace. One illustration is from WELS Meditations -

"WELS Meditations, March-May 2014, for Monday, 17 March 2014.   "No matter what you did yesterday -- or failed to do -- and no matter what you will do tomorrow, God has forgiven you." (This must have been music to the itching ears of Marvin Schwan.)

The Eduard Preuss quotation, which is dearly loved by John Brug (WELS), Jack Cascione  (Cascione Synod) and Paul McCain (Lead Singer, The Copycats), states that everyone in the world is born forgiven. Everyone.

But Galatians does not say this - nor does any passage in the Bible. Why would we baptize infants if they were born forgiven and already saved? Why confess sins that are already forgiven?

UOJ version of Antinomianism proves that no one escapes the Law of the Antinomians. They condemn and excommunicate those who deny and reject their UOJ nonsense. Thus during Luther's lifetime, Agricola the Antinomian, constantly agitated against Luther.

The Law shows us our need for the Savior, so the Law is spiritual (from the Holy Spirit), useful, and good. The Law is a brief way of saying the entire universe was created by God, so those principles are part of everything we do. People have shown that they bring themselves to grief by saying they are above or beyond the Law. They damage many others, too, who suffer from the Antinomian illusion of being too mature, wise, or noble for the Law.

3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:

Paul means to say that the Law is something material , mundane, earthly. It may restrain evil, but it does not deliver from sin. The Law does not justify; it does not bring a person to heaven. I do not obtain eternal life because I do not kill, commit adultery, steal, etc. Such mere outward decency does not constitute Christianity. The heathen observe the same restraints to avoid punishment or to secure the advantages of a good reputation.

Martin Luther. Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians (Kindle Locations 2017-2020).

On a lower level, the Law restrains our behavior, and we can see that in effect across all cultures. But the higher level of the Law accuses our conscience, so we feel guilt and seek the comfort of forgiveness and salvation.

But the Law does not bring comfort and forgiveness, as Luther wrote so eloquently -

...the Law has nothing to do with justification. If it thrusts its nose into the business of justification we must talk harshly to the Law to keep it in its place. The conscience ought not to be on speaking terms with the Law. The conscience ought to know only Christ. To say this is easy, but in times of trial, when the conscience writhes in the presence of God, it is not so easy to do. As such times we are to believe in Christ as if there were no Law or sin anywhere, but only Christ. We ought to say to the Law: "Mister Law, I do not get you. You stutter so much. I don't think that you have anything to say to me."

When it is not a question of salvation or justification with us, we are to think highly of the Law and call it "holy, just, and good." (Romans 7: 12) The Law is of no comfort to a stricken conscience. Therefore it should not be allowed to rule in our conscience, particularly in view of the fact that Christ paid so great a price to deliver the conscience from the tyranny of the Law. Let us understand that the Law and Christ are impossible bedfellows. The Law must leave the bed of the conscience, which is so narrow that it cannot hold two, as Isaiah says, chapter 28, verse 20.

Martin Luther. Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians (Kindle Locations 2031-2039).

4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

This verse is clearly a Virgin Birth passage, because the point is assumed rather than argued. That was already known in Paul's circles, so there was no need to repeat the obvious. But it is restated in another form - God sent forth His Son - divine nature, born of a woman, born under the Law - human nature. This God-Man redeemed those born under the Law, paying the price for their sins.

This is the great message of the Gospel, that the power of the Law was overcome by the Savior born under the Law. This came about in the fulness of time. God prepared His people for centuries and provided a Savior for them who would convert many of His own people (though He was rejected by the great and wise) and send forth the Gospel across the Roman Empire.

It is said that all future empires modeled themselves on the Roman Empire - the Muslim Ottoman Empire took Constantinople (the Second Rome). The Medieval Empire was called the Holy Roman Empire. And Hitler considered his reign the Third Reich or Empire. Whatever man designed, God used to extend His Kingdom. Wherever the British landed and established their fueling ports and trading zones, they brought education and the Gospel.

Through the Means of Grace, Jesus transcended the empires of man to establish His Kingdom, which continues to grow as new souls are added and new lands conquered for the Gospel.

6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. 7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

This is the Holy Communion passage, in a sense, because Paul refers to the Lord's Prayer, which was traditionally reserved for closed communion, when all others were ushered out of church. (Traditions vary, of course)

The importance is shown by the Lord's Prayer in Matthew, Luke, and Romans 8:15 as well.

This shows the pure grace of God, since this forgiveness comes to us through faith, not through works of the Law.

WELS Professor John Jeske Obituary.
WELS Documented Blog

Obituary for Pastor John C. Jeske

http://welsdocument.blogspot.com/2014/12/pastor-john-c-jeske-funeral-arrangements.html
Pastor John Carl Edward Jeske

http://www.heritagefuneral.com/obituaries/John-Jeske/

In February of 1924 God gave a son to John Gustave and Elizabeth Jeske of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The father taught his family the faith and love that are Christianity. The son never wanted to be anything but a Lutheran pastor like his father.

John C. Jeske would spend all but one year of his long ministry in a small Wisconsin triangle, between Milwaukee, Mequon and Watertown. God gave him a love for people, and it was people he served with his mind and his heart and his will and his hands.

In 1948 John served as a Tutor at Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN. In 1949 he was assigned from seminary to St. Marcus Evangelical Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. In 1952 Jeske was called to serve St. John’s, on 68th & Forest Home Avenue, at that time called Root Creek. Christmas of 1969 saw his family move to Mequon where he joined the faculty of Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary.

During his Seminary years, Professor Jeske served three congregations that were without a pastor: Brown Deer, Grafton, and northwest Milwaukee. Jeske also served as a traveling professor in Siberia and in Japan.

When Birds Feed in a Storm

I was running out of corn ears, so I stopped at a hardware store and bought some perma-corn, which is a composite I used before. It lasts longer and the squirrels enjoy it. A big bag of cracked corn tempted me, and I yielded. That was a good choice.

I replaced the corn on the squirrel feeder - they eat an ear each day. I put the new compost in the pile and spread some newspapers out to soak up the rain. We are getting days of rain, which is a good time to expand the Jackson Mulch project.

I wondered how the cracked corn would do, so I scattered plenty on a relatively dry section of newspapers. The cold rain followed a hint of snow this morning, and the drizzle continued all day.

Soon I had a line up of birds on the ground, enjoying cracked corn. I saw my first male cardinal, back at the squirrel feeder. Cardinals are shy, male cardinals even more than the females.. Close up I had mourning doves, a junco, sparrows, and some others. I am hoping for blue jays, which always picked up corn from the squirrel feeder in Bella Vista.

Three front yards on our block, including ours, had flocks of starlings feeding in the grass but ignoring my suet (beef kidney fat). How about that! Doubtless the overcast, drizzly warm weather was good for insect  and worm life, and they went for their favorite food. Later, a downy woodpecker cheeped on the maple tree as it enjoyed the suet by itself.

The birds continued to feed on the cracked corn and are still there late in the afternoon. Some people put window screens on blocks, so they can elevate the seed and keep it somewhat dry on days like this. Newspapers work almost as well, since they soak rain away from the surface.

The corn brought out a new crew of birds, and a large number at once. I have been scattering black oil sunflower seeds every day, but never saw more than a few doves on the ground. Of course, birds will be quite cautious at first and not feed until they feel safe.

As various gardening sites point out, establishing feeding habits in the yard will benefit the garden later. But it is also true that a Creation garden will provide far more food for birds than an ordinary yard or one where they trust insecticide.

Mr. Gardening sprayed for mosquitoes three times, and it was less effective each time. They came right back. He learned his lesson, but he had to pay tuition.

Guardians of Peace Leak Top Secret Guide for Squirrels

Yes, I have this feeder.

Ignored by the mainstream press, this confidential memo was leaked by the Guardians of Peace -

Top Secret Guide for Squirrels. Eyes Only. Shred after Reading.

My Fellow Rodents:

Life is difficult and dangerous, but it can be a whole lot better near a garden. Take my advice and do not let this memorandum be read by any other species.

Humans have a strange, conflicted attitude about us. They hate the way we raid their bird feeders, but they love our antics. Concentrate on cuteness and you will live high on the hog.

Some of our best characteristics are switching the tail, hopping around, and jumping from tree to tree. Humans find that endlessly entertaining.

Best of all, they love to see us eating. They will set up squirrel feeders far away from the bird feeders, so use the distant feeders to encourage them. Sit up and make a big show of the meal. Chase your friend around the tree a few times. I do that with Walnut, just to keep the corn ears coming.

Every so often, do the big startle. "Oh, someone is looking!" They will laugh and point a camera, hoping for a good shot.

This is another reason to laugh at squirrel proof feeder ads.

Eat the corn from above, hanging by your feet. They cannot imagine the same thing, so they gasp and point.

Visit the empty ear, so they say, "Oh, I have to put another one in, or they will raid the bird feeder."

I have this model of squirrel-proof feeder.

They cannot guard that bird feeder all day, so collect the stuff that falls to the ground. When everything is quiet, sit on the squirrel proof feeder and feast.

Do not worry about dogs. They make more noise than a marching band at halftime. However, cats are jerks. They will quietly stalk and pounce. Warn the little ones to stay high in the tree until they reach their full growth. Few cats will risk a battle with an adult squirrel. Chatter at them from the first limb. Humans will say, "Listen to that saucy squirrel, cussing out our Siamese."

Yours, Confidentially,

Acorn

Extra Work To Ruin Roses - How To Avoid It

Knockout Roses are smaller, but prolific.
They are immune to black spot.

I mentioned the Icha-peek to one reader, and that person confessed. An Icha-peek is one more look at this blog, to see if a new post is published, late at night. One reader told me he looked three times a day and enjoyed seeing new posts each time. Therefore, I feel obliged to provide that last post more often. I add to posts later, so it does not hurt to come back later.

Today I recalled all the bad advice I received about growing roses, so I decided to list it as a warning to those who want to enjoy roses at their best (and do less work at the same time). I put the bad rose advice in bold, black letters.

Each earthworm moves its weight in soil every day.
No gardener can keep up, so why try?
Worms constantly improve the soil.

Planting Bare Root Roses
Soak them in water until sprouts appear. Bad idea. They do not need to be waterlogged, and that will do them no good. That early red growth, turning green, is the sign of properly planted roses taking root. Please pay attention to the root-soil connection, which is vital.
Put fertilizer or sugar water in the hole when planting, so they have food. That is like putting a baby in a crib, on top of jars of Gerber's Mashed Potatoes. The fertilizer will kill or drive away the soil creatures needed by the plant for supplying food to the roots.
Use systemic insecticides. Why not just nuke the garden so nothing lives in the smoking crater? Insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides have one thing in common - they kill indiscriminately. They are stupid and expensive, like some lawyers. Protect the soil-food web and the good insects will take care of the bad ones. Healthy plants will shake off various kinds of attacks.

Instead - dig a hole, use good soil or perhaps mix mushroom compost in. Avoid manufactured, bagged soil, although that might be good if planting roses in very sandy soil. In that case I would let the mushroom compost dominate.

Scared to Death of Black Spot
Be prepared to spray them all the time with various expensive potions. Tons of perfume smell good too, right? I could tell one lady was at the university library before the elevator door opened on her floor. Black spot is a fungus that lives in the soil, so mulching and avoiding yellow roses will help that problem.

When black spot appears, pick off the leaves and cut away affected branches. Throw the diseased parts away (John 15:1-10) Pruning wakes up and benefits the rose. Roses involve some work - but not much. A woman at the chiro's office became angry and vocal about how I had to spray to have roses. Really? I do not spray at all.

Alternative - grow Knockout Roses. The red ones bloom continuously and the category is immune to black spot. The pink ones were less productive (first year) and the white ones seemed weak until the end of the summer. Rose production will grow with mature roots, so that was expected. Still, the reds were unbelievably productive.

Insecticides will kill ladybugs, parisitoid wasps, bees, spiders -
everything the rose garden needs.

Pruning Roses
Look over the 8 drawings and prune the roses where the dotted line indicates.

"Go to your garden, hold the book in the left hand and hold the clippers with your right hand - cutting in the same place on the rose as indicated by Drawing #1."

No wonder people avoid pruning!
A. Cut roses for indoors, for yourself and neighbors, all the time. Call it pruning. That works.
B. Cut off spent flowers, the ones that started to go to seed, dead wood, and anything in the wrong place. No need to look for five-leaf clusters. Snip snip - the roses love it.

Jackson Mulch has a lifetime guarantee:
it will feed, protect, and keep the garden watered.

Feeding Roses
Fertilize your roses after every blooming cycle, using the rose food with the right NPK balance. My uncle did that for his wife once, and burnt out the entire rose garden. Grampa Jackson was a rose gardener, so that made  it difficult for my aunt to bear. Giving Uncle Max NPK was like handing a garden hose to a toddler - bad things are going to happen soon after.

Instead, cover the entire rose bed with newspapers, making sure there are no gaps. I am not sure the ideal depth of the newspapers. I open them up and lay them down, one section at a time, often covering the gaps with the ad inserts.

Once the newspapers are down, cover that layer with wood mulch (or possibly finished compost). This combination is ideal for suppressing most weeds and for feeding the roses, and Jackson Mulch costs almost nothing in money or labor.

Why does Jackson Mulch work so well?
1. Rose bushes need protection from the soil drying out and blowing away, not to mention rain washing topsoil away.
2. Soil creatures slowly shred and decompose the mulch layer, and all the ingredients (creatures plus mulch) combine to feed the roots and keep the nutrition in the first foot of soil, where plants feed.
3. An attractive wood mulch deters people from walking on the rose bed, so the fragile network beneath the surface is spared and continues to thrive.

Notice how church consults charge enormous fees to ruin congregations. They must be good, or they would not charge so much. All their solutions are wrong, and yet they have created an industry of coaches, consultants, and traveling yahoos. All the congregations need is fidelity to the Word of God, faith in the Gospel. Lacking that, they imagine frantic, expensive activity is a substitution.

Mr. Lincoln has many wonderful characteristics -
fragrance, heavy petals, and hardiness.
